The statues of Townsend Harris (1804-1878) and Masayoshi Hotta (1810 -1864) in Sakura Castle Ruins Park, Sakura City, Chiba Prefecture.

Harris was the first U.S. Consul General to Japan and negotiated with Hotta, daimyo of Sakura Domain and high-ranking government official under the Tokugawa Shogunate, the Treaty of Amity and Commerce between Japan and the United States (also known as the Harris Treaty) which was signed in July 1858.
