Zojoji Temple
Zojoji is a Buddhist temple located in the Shiba neighborhood of Minato, Tokyo. The Shiba Park is built around the temple, with the Tokyo Tower standing beside it.
Zojoji was founded in 1393 and it is the main temple of the Jodo-sho (“Pure Land”) Chinzei sect of Buddhism in the Kanto region. It is notable for its relationship with the Tokugawa clan, with six of the Tokugawa shoguns being buried in the Taitoku-in Mausoleum in the temple grounds. Zojoji became the family temple of Tokugawa after Ieyasu Tokugawa, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, entered Edo (present-day Tokyo) in 1590 to establish his provincial government.
The temple’s Sangadetsumon (main gate) is the oldest wooden building in Tokyo, dating from 1622.

Access by train: 3 minutes by foot from Onarimon Station, 7 minutes from Daimon Station and 15 minutes from Hamamatsucho Station.
