A well-known landmark of Fujiyoshida in Yamanashi Prefecture, this large torii gate stands over National Route 138 in the Kamiyoshida district, just a few minutes away on foot from Fujisan Station.

Kanadorii (金鳥居) is the first of three torii gates on the approach to Mount Fuji and welcomes pilgrims traveling to the mountain. It is not the gate of a shrine, but marks the entrance to the sacred area of Mt. Fuji itself.

The original gate was built in 1788. Over the years, it was damaged many times by natural disasters and rebuilt several times. The present gate was constructed in 1957. It stands 9.88 meters tall and 7.9 meters wide between the pillars. The tablet at the center reads “Fuji-san.”
