The grave of the last shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu

Tokugawa Yoshinobu (徳川慶喜, 1837–1913) was the 15th and last shogun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which ruled Japan from 1603 to 1867. His reign lasted only about 15 months (29 August 1866 – 19 November 1867), before he abdicated and imperial rule was restored.

His grave is located in Kaneiji Cemetery within the grounds of Yanaka Cemetery, in the Yanaka area of Taito ward, Tokyo. Honoring Yoshinobu’s wishes, his funeral and burial followed Shinto rites instead of Buddhist traditions.

To the right of his grave is the grave of his wife, Mikako (1835-1894), and to the far left of other members of his family.
