Ichiya Kumagae – Japan’s First Olympic Medalist

The statue of Japanese tennis player Ichiya Kumagae (熊谷 一弥, 1890-1968) at Ariake Tennis Park, Ariake, Tokyo. In August 1920 at the Olympic Games Antwerb 1920 (Belgium), Kumagae won the silver medal becoming the first Japanese athlete ever to be awarded an Olympic medal in any sport.

The statue was created to commemorate the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.
