A manhole cover in Maebashi city, Gunma Prefecture. The design features Jomo Karuta (上毛かるた), a local card game (the old name of Gunma Prefecture is Jomo) which created in 1947 by Masahiko Urano (浦野匡彦, 1910-1986) with the aim people to be entertained while learning the history, places, industry etc of Gunma.
Each of the 44 cards has a phrase. In this manhole, there is the 9th card “け” 県都前橋 生糸の市 (Prefectural Capital Maebashi Raw Silk City) showing the great tradition of the prefecture in the production of silk.
