Omisaki Station – Japan’s closest station to the sea

Omisaki Station (大三東駅) is an unmanned railway station located in the Ariake area of the city of Shimabara, Nagasaki. It is operated by Shimabara Railway (known also known in short as Shimatetsu) a third-sector (semi-public) railway company on the Shimabara Railway Line and is located 34.1 km from Isahaya Station, the starting point of the line.

The outbound platform faces the Ariake Sea, and it is often referred to as “the station closest to the sea in Japan” alongside Umi-Shibaura Station (view photos of the station on this page in Greek) in Kanagawa Prefecture and Omigawa Station in Niigata Prefecture.
The station gained nationwide popularity after appearing in a 2021 commercial for Kirin Lemon soda.

Omisaki Station was opened on May 10, 1913. The current station building was rebuilt in September 1983.

These yellow handkerchiefs symbolize happiness and are part of a project launched by Shimabara Railway in 2015 to help revitalize the town. Known as the “Yellow Handkerchiefs of Happiness,” each one carries a written wish. Visitors can purchase them from the capsule vending machine in the seaside waiting room, write their own message, and hang it up. All of the handkerchiefs are later offered to a local shrine as prayers for happiness.
