Manhole covers in Toyohashi City, Aichi Prefecture

These are some of the manhole covers we saw during our short visit to Toyohashi City in Aichi Prefecture. There are more that we hope to photograph on a future visit.

The City Tram, the City Public Hall and the azaleas (tsutsuji), the official flower of the city of Toyohashi.
The Romanesque-style Toyohashi City Public Hall, built in 1931. In 1998 it was designated a National Tangible Cultural Property.

This manhole cover was made in 1996 to commemorate Toyohashi City’s 90th anniversary. Mikawa Port, Japan’s first port to handle the import of automobiles, is the main feature of the design.

This manhole cover features Tezutsu Hanabi, the “hand-held fireworks” of the Haneda Hachiman Shrine festival (held annually in October) and Yoshida Castle in Toyohashi Park.
