Nezu Shrine

Nezu Jinja (根津神社) is considered one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. According to legend, it was founded over 1,900 years ago by Yamato Takeru no Mikoto in Sendagi, north of its present location in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. In 1706, the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, relocated the shrine to its current site in Nezu.

The shrine is especially renowned for its garden, which features around 3,000 azalea bushes across some 50 varieties. Blooming from late April to May, they make Nezu Shrine one of Tokyo’s most impressive spring destinations.
