Haniwa figures in Hibiya Park

Replica haniwa figures in Hibiya Park, Tokyo. They were gifted to Tokyo Metropolitan Government from Miyazaki Prefecture in commemoration of the sister park agreement (signed on August 21, 1965) between Tokyo Metropolitan Hibiya Park and Miyazaki Heiwadai Park.

Haniwa are hollow terracotta figurines that were made for ritual use and buried with the dead during the Kofun period (3rd to 6th centuries AD). In Miyazaki Prefecture is home to many ancient burial mounds, including the Saitobaru Burial Mounds, containing over 300 mounds.
