
The bronze statue of bacteriologist Hideyo Noguchi (野口 英世, 1876-1928) in Ueno Park, Tokyo. Noguchi, born in Fukushima, is known for his research on syphilis spirochete and was one of the first Japanese scientists to achieve international recognition for his work.
The approximately four and a half meter statue was created by Professor Yoshida Saburo of the Tama Art University. The Latin words, “PRO BONO HUMANI GENERIS” (“For the Good of Humankind”), are inscribed on the stone base.
