A statue of Ninomiya Sontoku in his youth depicts him reading a book while carrying firewood on his back.
Sontoku (二宮 尊徳, 1787-1856), also known as Ninomiya Kinjiro, was born into a poor farming family in present-day Odawara City. Self-educated, he became an important agricultural reformer and economic thinker of the late Edo period (1603–1868).

This statue, one of countless found throughout Japan, was erected at Odawara Station in 2020 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Odawara City.
