Hirakawa-bashi (平川橋) is a wooden bridge that spans the inner moat and leads from Hitotsubashi 1-chome to the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, Tokyo. Hirakawa is the old name of the lower reaches of the Kanda River which merged with the Hibiya Inlet.
The bridge leads to Hirakawa-mon, the main gate of the Sannomaru of Edo Castle. Because it was the closest gate to ooku (the women’s quarters of Edo Castle) it was used by the maid servants. Αlso from this gate the criminals and the dead were taken out of the castle.

Hirakawa Bridge was originally built in 1614, but since then it has been renovated several times. The current bridge was rebuilt on March 31, 1988, and is 29.7m long and 7.82m wide.

It is one minute’s walk from Exits 1a or 1b of Takebashi Station on the Tokyo Metro Tozai Line.
