Jokeiji (浄慶寺) is a Buddhist temple of the Jodo sect, located on a small hill in the Kamiasao neighborhood of Asao-ku, Kawasaki. It was founded in 1615. The temple is known as the Kakio Hydrangea Temple because about 1,000 hydrangeas bloom on its grounds from mid to late June, creating a colorful and scenic view.

Jokeiji is also noted for its many arhat (rakan in Japanese) statues, representing the disciples of Buddha. These stone figures are scattered throughout the temple grounds and are known for their varied and expressive poses, many of which are humorous. New statues are added each year, so there’s always something new to enjoy every time you visit.
We visited the temple in September. The nature, green and serene, combined with the arhat’s warm presence, created a beautiful atmosphere that gave us a feeling of sweet relaxation. We plan to return in June when the hydrangeas are in full bloom.
