Lotus & Lanterns on Shinobazu Pond
Shinobazu Pond is located in the south of Ueno Park. The pond is divided in three sections. The Lotus Pond, because of the lotus flowers and the huge green leaves that during the summer completely cover its surface, the Boat Pond from the rental boats it hosts, and the Cormorant Pond which takes its name from the birds that inhabit it. At its center lies Benten Island on which stands the Bentendo Temple dedicated to goddess Benzaiten.
One of the events of Ueno’s Natsu Matsuri (Ueno Summer Festival) is Toro Nagashi ceremony, in which paper lanterns are floated on Shinobazu Pond.
Ueno Natsu Matsuri 2018: 14 July-12 August.
