Mitama Matsuri

Mitama Matsuri (みたままつり) is one of the most popular summer festivals in Tokyo. Celebrated since 1947, it is an Obon festival and Japanese people honor the spirits of their ancestors. It takes place at Yasukuni Shrine on 13-16 July.

Each year more than 300,000 visitors come here for the spectacular and nostalgic atmospere created by the 30,000 lanterns that light the way to the shrine. Additionally, various events are held including traditional dance and taiko drums performances and mikoshi (portable shrines) parades.
