Kameido Tenjin Shrine Fuji Matsuri

Kameido Tenjin Shrine (亀戸天神社) is known as the top spot in Tokyo to view wisteria (fuji in Japanese) in full bloom during the spring months. First planted during the Edo period (1603–1868), these wisteria vines create a scenic beauty that has been captured in numerous works of art, including famous ukiyo-e and shin-hanga prints. The Fuji Matsuri (藤まつり) which this year takes place between April 5-30, is a major event of the shrine.

The shrine was built in 1646 and is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, a 9th-century Japanese scholar, poet, and politician who was later deified as the god of learning, Tenman-Tenjin.

Kameido Tenjin Shrine is located in the Koto ward of Tokyo and is a 15-minute walk from Kameido Station on JR East Chuo-Sobu Line (27 minutes from Shinjuku Station).
