A rock carved with the most famous haiku poem can be found in the Kiyosumi Garden in Fukagawa, Tokyo’s Koto ward.  Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) lived in the area from 1680 to 1694 and composed this haiku during that time, in 1686. The Basho monument was placed in the Garden in October 1934.
