Saigo Takamori Statue in Ueno Park

The statue of Saigo Takamori with his dog Tsun near the southern entrance of Ueno Park. It was built in 1898 by the sculptor Takamura Koun.

Saigo (January 23, 1828 – September 24, 1877) was one of the most influential samurai in Japanese history and main figures of the Meiji Restoration.
He was the inspiration for the film “The Last Samurai” (starring Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe).
